“It is sad to know that at the G20 I might be the only woman. We need the best ideas at the political level to give the right opportunities to all women” and “to achieve equality by 2030, we need parental leave payments, to consolidate childcare and elderly care. These are the investments we need to make for a solid and sustainable recovery. With the contribution of the W20 we will be able to lay the basis for representing men and women equally in work and in the family“. This was stated by the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen. “It is not true,” von der Leyen continued in a video message on the occasion of the Women20 Summit, “that we have to choose between career and family. I know the obstacles, but we must demand fair access to the world of work and be able to raise our children at the same time”.
Another issue to be emphasised, according to the President of the European Commission, is education. “We need to invest more in education,” she said, “because 11 million children could be forced to drop out of school. At the G7 I announced that the Commission will increase the funds set aside for education by a third, to 100 million”.
Von der Leyen: “Parità di genere entro il 2030”
“È triste sapere che al G20 io potrei essere l’unica donna. Abbiamo bisogno delle migliori idee al livello politico per dare le giuste opportunità a tutte le donne” e “per raggiungere la parità entro il 2030, abbiamo bisogno dei pagamenti dei congedi parentali, di consolidare l’assistenza per l’infanzia e per gli anziani. Questi sono gli investimenti che dobbiamo fare per una ripresa solida e sostenibile. Con il contributo del W20 riusciremo a gettare la base per rappresentare gli uomini e le donne in maniera equa sia nel lavoro sia nella famiglia“. Lo afferma la presidente della Commissione Europea, Ursula Von der Leyen. “Non è vero – ha proseguito von der Leyen in un videomessaggio in occasione del Summit del Women20 – che dobbiamo scegliere tra la carriera e la famiglia. Conosco gli ostacoli, ma dobbiamo pretendere un accesso equo al mondo del lavoro e poter allo stesso tempo crescere i nostri bambini”.
Un altro tema su cui porre l’accento, secondo la presidente della Commissione europea, è quello dell’istruzione. “Dobbiamo investire di più nell’istruzione – ha detto – perché 11 milioni di bambini potrebbero essere costretti all’abbandono scolastico. Al G7 ho annunciato che la Commissione aumenterà di un terzo i fondi stabiliti per l’istruzione, raggiungendo i 100 milioni”.
