Officer Derek Chauvin appears in the dock and before a country which, with bated breath, demands justice for the 46 year old African American brutally murdered for a counterfeit $20 note. A death that shocked the United States in the midst of the pandemic, bringing to the fore once again the unresolved problem of excessive police violence especially towards minorities, with frequent accusations of racism.
“America is calling for justice, the whole world is watching” – said Benjamin Crump, one of the lawyers representing George Floyd’s family. “This murder is not a difficult case to judge” – declared the lawyer, speaking before the start of the trial, referring to images in which Chauvin chokes Floyd with his knee, despite the latter’s pleas to let go.
The trial for the death of George Floyd is a ‘referendum on American justice’ to see if ‘justice and equality for all’ can be guaranteed in the United States, lawyers for the family of the African-American killed by former police officer Derek Chauvin said shortly before the start of the trial.

E’ stato proprio l’agente Derek Chauvin il primo a presentarsi al banco degli imputati e davanti ad un Paese che, col fiato sospeso, chiede giustizia per il 46enne afroamericano ucciso brutalmente per una banconota da 20 dollari contraffatta. Una morte che ha scioccato gli Stati Uniti nel mezzo della pandemia, portando alla ribalta ancora una volta l’irrisolto problema dell’eccesso di violenza da parte della polizia soprattutto verso le minoranze, con l’accusa frequente di razzismo.
“L’America chiede giustizia, il mondo intero ci sta guardando“, ha affermato Benjamin Crump, uno degli avvocati che rappresentano la famiglia di George Floyd. “Questo assassinio non è un caso difficile da giudicare”, ha detto il legale parlando prima dell’avvio del processo, riferendosi alle immagini in cui Chauvin soffoca Floyd col ginocchio, nonostante questi implorasse di mollare la presa.
Il processo per la morte di George Floyd è un vero e proprio “referendum sulla giustizia americana”, per vedere se negli Stati Uniti possano essere garantiti “giustizia e uguaglianza per tutti”, hanno affermato poco prima dell’avvio del processo i legali della famiglia dell’afroamericano ucciso dall’ex agente di polizia Derek Chauvin.
