Congo, Nyiragongo volcano rages: thousands flee
The Nyiragongo volcano, one of the most dangerous in the world according to experts, has exploded a few kilometres from Goma, capital of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Thousands of people are fleeing towards the border with Rwanda, while the authorities call for calm. In 1977, the 3,000-metre-high volcano with its densely populated slopes killed more than 600 people.
