Confinement is being tightened in Sydney, where from Saturday all non-essential shops will have to remain closed and residents in the neighbourhoods most affected by Covid-19, in the South West of the city, will have to stay indoors. This was announced by the Premier of the Australian state of New South Wales, Gladys Berejiklian.
“We have stabilised the curve to a certain extent, but we have not been able to bring it down,” Berejiklian explained at a press conference. In New South Wales, the number of infections has risen above 100 in the last 24 hours, in which one death was also recorded. The number of active cases remains stubbornly high,” the premier added. In Melbourne, where the fifth lockdown since the pandemic began two days ago, restrictions on travel to and from Sydney have been tightened. Australia’s ‘Zero Covid’ strategy, which has effectively closed its borders since March last year, has been undermined by the slow pace of the vaccination campaign and the rapid spread of the Delta variant.

Si restringe il confinamento a Sydney, dove da sabato tutti i negozi non essenziali dovranno restare chiusi e i residenti dei quartieri più colpiti dal Covid-19, nel Sud Ovest della città, dovranno rimanere chiusi in casa. Lo ha annunciato la premier dello Stato australiano del Nuovo Galles del Sud, Gladys Berejiklian.
“Abbiamo fino a un certo punto stabilizzato la curva ma non siamo riusciti ad abbatterla”, ha spiegato Berejiklian in conferenza stampa. Nel Nuovo Galles del Sud il numero dei contagi è salito sopra il centinaio nelle ultime 24 ore, nelle quali è stato inoltre registrato un decesso. Il numero dei casi attivi rimane elevato in modo “ostinato”, ha aggiunto la premier. A Melbourne, dove due giorni fa è stato disposto il quinto lockdown dall’inizio della pandemia, sono state rafforzate le restrizioni sugli spostamenti da e verso Sydney. La strategia “Zero Covid” dell’Australia, che ha di fatto chiuso i confini dal marzo dello scorso anno, è stata messa in crisi dalla lentezza della campagna vaccinale e dalla rapidità di diffusione della variante Delta.
