British Home Secretary Priti Patel has asked social media to remove from their platforms videos praising migrants crossing the English Channel in dinghies, which have gone viral.
One of these on Tiktok has been viewed over 800,000 times. But there are also others on Instagram, Yotube, Twitter and Facebook advertising fake visa and passport services. “Posts that promote and even glamorise these deadly crossings are totally unacceptable,” the minister said, stressing that often these kinds of videos “are exploited by traffickers to promote their business”.
At the beginning of the year, the undersecretary for immigration, Chris Philp, had met with representatives of the main social media companies but in the end less than half of the removal requests submitted by the UK National Crime Agency were granted. The number of migrants crossing the Channel so far has almost doubled compared to the same period last year, with over 3,100 people reaching the UK coast by the end of May. Last week, nearly 600 migrants were apprehended in three days as they attempted to make the crossing.

Uno di questi su Tiktok è stato visualizzato oltre 800.000 volte. Ma ce ne sono altri anche su Instagram, Yotube, Twitter e Facebook che pubblicizzano servizi di visti e passaporti falsi. “I post che promuovono e persino rendono glamour queste traversate mortali sono totalmente inaccettabili”, ha detto la ministra sottolineando che spesso questo genere di video “vengono sfruttati dai trafficanti per promuovere i loro affari”.
A inizio anno il sottosegretario all’Immigrazione, Chris Philp, aveva incontrato i rappresentanti delle principali società di social media ma alla fine meno della metà delle richieste di rimozione presentate dall’Agenzia britannica per il crimine (National Crime Agency) è stata accolta.
Il numero di migranti che ha attraversato il Canale finora è quasi raddoppiato rispetto allo stesso periodo dell’anno scorso, con oltre 3.100 persone che hanno raggiunto la costa inglese a fine maggio. La settimana scorsa, sono stati fermati in tre giorni quasi 600 migranti mentre tentavano di effettuare la traversata.
