More than 270 firefighters and military personnel in Greece, supported by 16 firefighting planes, are still fighting the large forest fire that has been devouring the forest in the region of Geraneia, 90 kilometres west of Athens, for three days and say this morning that the containment of the flames, having tamed the main front, is making ‘progress’.
The blaze, which started on Wednesday on the coastal area of the Gulf of Corinth, is the most serious to hit Greece in 30 years, and so far ahead of the fire season, fire chief Stefanos Kolokouris told Ant1 television.
Despite progress, firefighters remain cautious, fearing the main front will regain strength in the rugged mountain terrain west of the Isthmus of Corinth.
So far the flames have destroyed 55 square kilometres of pine forests, an expert, Euthymios Lekkas, professor of environmental disaster management at the University of Athens, told AFP.

Il rogo, innescato mercoledì sulla zona costiera del Golfo di Corinto, è il più grave ad aver colpito la Grecia negli ultimi 30 anni, e così in anticipo sulla stagione degli incendi, ha dichiarato alla tv Ant1 il capo dei pompieri, Stefanos Kolokouris.
I vigili del fuoco, malgrado i progressi, restano prudenti, nel timore che il fronte principale riprenda vigore sugli impervi terreni di montagna a ovest dell’istmo di Corinto.
Finora le fiamme hanno distrutto 55 km quadrati di pinete, fa sapere all’Afp un esperto, Euthymios Lekkas, docente di gestione di catastrofi ambientali all’Università di Atene
