The European Commission has signed the third contract with the pharmaceutical companies BioNTech and Pfizer. It will reserve an additional 1.8 billion doses on behalf of all EU Member States between the end of 2021 and 2023. It will allow the purchase of 900 million doses of the current vaccine and a vaccine adapted to variants, with the possibility of purchasing another 900 million doses.
“With our signature, the new contract is now in place, which is good news for our long-term fight to protect European citizens from the virus and its variants. The production and delivery in the EU of up to 1.8 billion doses is guaranteed. Potential contracts with other manufacturers will follow the same model, to the benefit of all”, commented European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

La Commissione europea ha firmato il terzo contratto con le società farmaceutiche BioNTech e Pfizer. Si riserva così ulteriori 1,8 miliardi di dosi per conto di tutti gli Stati membri dell’Ue, tra la fine del 2021 e il 2023. Consentirà l’acquisto di 900 milioni di dosi del vaccino attuale e di un vaccino adattato alle varianti, con la possibilità di acquistarne altri 900 milioni di dosi.
“Con la nostra firma, il nuovo contratto è ora in vigore, che è una buona notizia per la nostra lotta a lungo termine per proteggere i cittadini europei dal virus e dalle sue varianti. La produzione e la consegna nell’Ue fino a 1,8 miliardi di dosi sono garantite. I potenziali contratti con altri produttori seguiranno lo stesso modello, a vantaggio di tutti”, ha commentato la presidente della Commissione europea, Ursula von der Leyen.
