China’s most famous virologist, Shi Zhengli, head of the Wuhan laboratory at the centre of international speculation about the origin of the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus, denies as “baseless” suspicions about the virology institute and reports of three of her colleagues falling ill before the outbreak of abnormal pneumonia, later identified as Covid-19. “How could I provide evidence for something for which there is no evidence?” the scientist said in a rare interview, granted to the New York Times.
“I don’t know how it came to this, to constantly throw mud at an innocent scientist,” he continued. The Wuhan lab has recently returned to the international spotlight, after US President Joe Biden called on US intelligence to investigate the origin of the coronavirus, including the possibility of it escaping from a laboratory, and more recently G7 leaders have also called for a new ‘timely and transparent’ investigation into the origin of Covid-19.

La virologa più famosa della Cina, Shi Zhengli, responsabile del laboratorio di Wuhan al centro delle speculazioni internazionali sull’origine del coronavirus Sars-CoV-2, smentisce come “senza fondamento” i sospetti sull’istituto di virologia e le notizie su tre dei suoi colleghi che si sarebbero ammalati prima dello scoppio dell’epidemia di polmoniti anomale, in seguito identificate come Covid-19. “Come potrei fornire prove di qualcosa di cui non ci sono prove?”, ha detto la scienziata in una rara intervista, concessa al New York Times.
“Non so come si sia arrivati a questo, gettare costantemente fango su una scienziata innocente”, ha proseguito. Il laboratorio di Wuhan è tornato di recente sotto i riflettori a livello internazionale, dopo che il presidente Usa, Joe Biden, ha chiesto all‘intelligence americana di indagare sull’origine del coronavirus, compresa la possibilità di una sua fuoriuscita da un laboratorio, e più recentemente anche dai leader del G7 è arrivata la richiesta di una nuova indagine “tempestiva e trasparente” sull’origine del Covid-19.
